The Encouraged Church

The New Testament book of First Peter was written to encourage first century Christians who were experiencing persecution and suffering for their belief. First Peter is a book that is still speaking to Christians today, encouraging us in our faith and in the midst of hard times. During the summer of 2013, we at Rose Hill are diving into God's Word for encouragement, praying that we might become first an encouraged church, and then an encouraging church.

The Key to Perseverance | 1 Peter 5:5b-14
August 11, 2013 | Pastor Mike

With the final words of his letter, Peter records the real reason he was written: so that we might stand fast. But it's not easy to persevere in the midst of hard times. In the last message of our series, find out what it takes to become a "perseverer."

Shepherd Mentality | 1 Peter 5:1-5a
July 21, 2013 | Pastor Mike

Leaders in the church are called to the same calling as Jesus—a shepherd. [Due to month-long repairs in our sanctuary, the audio is not available for this message. Our apologies.]

Joyful Sufferers | 1 Peter 4:12-19
July 14, 2013 | Pastor Mike

Advanced beginner. Executive assistant. Friendly competitor. Those are just a few of the titles in our society that seem like oxymorons. Well here's another one: joyful sufferer. It just doesn't seem possible. And yet that's exactly what God wants us to be. [Due to month-long repairs in our sanctuary, the audio is not available for this message. Our apologies.]

Think Like Christ | 1 Peter 4:1-11
July 7, 2013 | Pastor Mike

The Bible tells us again and again that Christians are supposed to think like Christ. And that Christ-like attitude doesn't change when we are struggling. First Peter paints a picture of what it looks like to think like Christ in the midst of suffering.

What to Do When Doing Good Brings Bad | 1 Peter 3:13-22
June 30, 2013 | Pastor Mike

Sometimes we suffer for doing bad—and probably deserve it. But what if we do good and still suffer? What if we suffer for our Christian faith?

Showing Christ through Relationships | 1 Peter 3:8-12
June 23, 2013 | Pastor Mike

We can show Christ's love to people around us simply by the way we conduct ourselves, including within our closest relationships. That includes relationships with God's people (the church), as well as relationships that do us more harm than good. Check out the third and final message in our "series within a series" on lifestyle evangelism.

Showing Christ through Marriage | 1 Peter 3:1-7
June 16, 2013 | Pastor Mike

We can show Christ's love to people around us simply by the way we conduct ourselves, including within our marriages. The way in which wives treat their husbands, and husbands their wives, illustrates Christ's own submission and servant-leadership to the world around us.

Showing Christ through Submission | 1 Peter 2:13-25
June 9, 2013 | Pastor Mike

We can show Christ's love to people around us simply by the way we conduct ourselves in every area of life. That includes how we relate to authority. Using Christ as an example, we must give those in authority the respect and honor they deserve.

Staying Spiritually Fit | 1 Peter 2:1-12
May 26, 2013 | Pastor Mike

We are constantly being told ways that we can stay physically fit. But how often do you hear advice on staying spiritually fit? Probably not that often. Luckily, God gives us two tips for spiritual fitness, found in 1 Peter 2.

Living the Inside Out | 1 Peter 1:13-25
May 19, 2013 | Pastor Mike

Anyone who believes in Jesus has a radical new identity. That is made clear from the opening lines of 1 Peter. But that "newness" isn't just on the inside—it should be seen on the outside, too. Our conduct is transformed along with our identity.

May 5, 2013 | Pastor Mike

The simple fact: suffering tests our faith. It's tough to follow God when times are tough. But thanks to Jesus Christ, we can have hope no matter what we go through.
