The Life & Light: 1 John

In the fall of 2015 we are taking a long look at the book of First John. This 11-week series, which will take us up until advent, zooms in on a letter from Jesus' disciple, John, to the first century churches... and also to us as believers. First John gives us a glimpse of who Jesus is, and how we should live now that we are in his "light."

The Confidence We Have | 1 John 5:13-21

John ends his letter by reminding the church why he wrote the letter in the first place: so, instead of worrying about where we stand with God, we can be confident in our relationships with Him.

Anyone Who Believes | 1 John 5:1-12
November 15, 2015 | Pastor Mike

The end of First John is like an extended essay on John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he sent his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." In 1 John 5, after talking about God's love in chapter 4, John explains just what it means that Jesus offers eternal life to those who believe.

Love Made Perfect | 1 John 4:7-21
November 8, 2015 | Pastor Mike

Jesus commands us to love. And John, Jesus' own disciple, reminds us over and over again that as Christians, we must love each other. But why should we love? Why is it so crucial for a Christian to love? First John 4 has the answers.

Test the Spirits | 1 John 4:1-6
November 1, 2015 | Pastor Mike

"Don't believe everything you hear." Have you ever heard anyone say that? The apostle John gives us that same advice for dealing with people who appear to be teaching "Christian" messages: test it before you believe it.

Love Is | 1 John 3:11-24
October 25, 2015 | Pastor Mike

In the second half of his letter, John turns his attention to love, the mark of believers. And he gives us a glimpse of what love really looks like, and also what it doesn't.

Born of Him | 1 John 2:28-3:10
October 18, 2015 | Pastor Mike

Jesus taught that those who believe in him are "born again" by the Holy Spirit. John tells us that this is an act of God's deep love for us, and changes how we live our lives as his children.

Abide in Him | 1 John 2:15-27
October 11, 2015 | Pastor Mike

There is an enemy after all of us. Thanks to the fellowship we have with Christ, 1 John tells us, we can stand strong in Him and overcome any enemy.

Believe and Be Sure | 1 John 2:12-14
October 4, 2015 | Pastor Mike

When all have moments when we feel insecure. And when we do, we all seek reassurance. The Bible gives us reassurance that no matter what happens, if we believe in Jesus we can rest in our identity.

Love Made Complete | 1 John 2:3-11
September 27, 2015 | Pastor Mike

Paul told us to "test" ourselves. Jesus' disciple John told us how to do it: our relationships with others tell us something about our relationship with God.

No Darkness At All | 1 John 1:5-2:2
September 20, 2015 | Pastor Mike

Nobody likes to walk in the darkness. It's dangerous. John tells us the same thing is true for our spiritual lives: God is light, and we don't want to walk in the darkness.

The Life Appeared | 1 John 1:1-4
September 13, 2015 | Pastor Mike

John begins his letter not by introducing himself, but by introducing Jesus. And he introduces him with some major qualifiers: he is the Word of life, the Life, and the Eternal life.
